My name is Dan, and I’m a bowhunter. I’ve been hunting off and on since I was 16, but only became serious about it in my late 20’s. Hunting deer and turkey with a bow is a passion of mine. Between September and January, it’s more of an obsession. Like most bowhunters, I’ve got a lot of stories. Most of them are comedies. Some are tragedies. A lot of them are simply about me going out and finding some peace in the woods.
Why I Started In Search of Whitetails
Every time that I go out hunting, I learn something. Last year I saw more deer and turkeys while hunting than I ever have, and that’s on public land. Bowhunting, like most sports, requires practice and dedication to achieve success. Unlike most sports, bowhunting is usually a solo activity. We learn things on our own, or from talking to other hunters. So on my blog, you’ll find:
- How-to articles on scouting, archery, hunting, and woodsmanship
- Discussion of hunting strategies and tactics
- Guides to and reviews of hunting equipment and outdoor gear
- Contests, stories, photos, and videos about hunting in the midwest.
I also started this site because it combines two of my favorite things: bowhunting and blogging. I love to write. This isn’t my first blog, or even my second. I’ve done it enough that I even have a system to start my own blog or website in about 20 minutes. Anyone can do it, and we need more hunters to be blogging. If you start a blog of your own, please let me know and I’ll link to you!
Finally, I started In Search of Whitetails to meet and connect with other hunters. Bowhunting is not a family legacy for me. I’m the only hunter in my generation. My grandfather was a meat hunter and deer camp regular who lived in Pennsylvania, but I was too young to ever go hunting with him. I inherited his 30-06 and his frugal lifestyle, but hopefully not the male pattern baldness. Fingers crossed on that one!
Marketing and Product Reviews
Like most hunters, I love gadgets and gear. Most of what I think I need in the woods, I already have. However, I do enjoy reviewing and comparing the product options for bowhunters, as I’ve recently done for hunting binoculars and digital scouting cameras. If you’d like to send me a product to evaluate, I’m open to that, with the understanding that it shouldn’t cost me anything and I’ll give it a fair review. I want my readers to trust me.

Freelance Writing and Guest Posts
I love writing (both fiction and non-fiction) and have worked hard with the hopes of doing it well. Part of that involves reaching a wider audience, so I’m keenly interested in writing for other magazines or blogs. If you edit one of these, please contact me if you’d like to hear an article or series proposal tailored to your market. My primary areas of expertise are bowhunting (whitetail deer and wild turkey), freshwater fishing, and general outdoorsmanship. Some of my best work includes:
- Preseason Scouting in Urban Areas, my report of deer and turkey scouting within the city limits.
- 10 Essential Skills for Bowhunters, a recipe for success in hunting with bow and arrow.
- Bowhunting the October Lull, which details the research and recommends strategies for hunting whitetails during this transition period.
- Hunting on the Rise, where I break down the latest census of hunters and fishermen in the U.S.
If you’re a blogger, let’s discuss a guest post. I’ve written some of these already, and would be happy to provide one for your blog. I’m also interested in publishing guest posts from other hunter-writers, with a link back to your blog or web site.
